The Villain Bracket: Why We Love Star Wars' Greatest Antagonists
Some stories are remembered because of their heroes.
Others are remembered because of the people standing in their way.
One of my favourite projects on the Star Wars Canon Podcast has been our Villain Bracket, where we compare some of the greatest antagonists the franchise has ever produced. It's fun, occasionally controversial, and always a reminder of just how rich Star Wars has become.
A great villain isn't simply evil.
They challenge the hero's beliefs.
They force impossible decisions.
Sometimes they're even right, just in the wrong way.
That's why characters like Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Count Dooku and Grand Admiral Thrawn continue to spark debate decades after their first appearances.
They aren't obstacles.
They're stories in themselves.
I've always found villains fascinating because they often reflect the best and worst parts of ourselves. Their ambitions, fears, pride and failures make them strangely relatable, even when we disagree with their choices.
That's exactly what makes discussions like the Villain Bracket so enjoyable.
There are no definitive answers.
Only great conversations.
